Winter Break III

The next day was our "Sunday," otherwise known as Thursday to the rest of the world. And we knew we had to juice it. So we jumped in the van and headed out to the Salton Sea, a destination we'd talked about getting to ever since we'd moved here two years ago.

The drive down to the desert WITH Papa was fascinating. Usually we're driving to meet him, so it's just us wandering. But with Ranger Joshua with us everything had a name, a tidbit from a work story, and history. The vast expanses were transformed into places that have touched his life.

Eventually we made it out to the Salton Sea and were at first a little disappointed. After all, there was a haze that made the visibility pretty poor. However, when we paddled out onto the lake on our first ever attempt at family-kayaking, we changed our tunes! It was stunningly gorgeous in a calm way. No winds. Sun tucked behind a bank of haze. And surreal almost. What a treat! As we finished up our paddling we got moving quicker because I had one more destination I really wanted us to get to...

Salvation Mountain. The photos of it online do it justice! Everything about it, including the drive into town there, were spot on different. The roads, the neighborhood, and then the people there at closing time! We can't forget the bodysuited-pink-skeleton woman and her youtube entourage. Talk about surreal! Anyhow, a fun and adventurous close to our long and fulfilling day and weekend. It felt like we'd gone on a huge roadtrip these last few days, and that was with Joshua working one of them, and getting errands done, and everything else. Life is good!

I would not have noticed this monument to Liar Peg Leg Smith!

Winter Break II

The next day was our weekend...and the frig was getting very low after the holidays...and we had an errand in Vista...so we headed west to accomplish a long list of to do's...and then we found the ocean. An ocean in the winter is a treasure always, but especially now that we live not-so-close to it. And sunsets at the ocean's shore are the end of a perfectly busy, odd, but productive day.

On top of that, I have this beautiful bigger than life set of memories, from watching my loves all jump and trying to capture it on "film," to attempting to eat dinner at two restaurants and finding ourselves getting up and leaving (unheard of), to finally finding the perfect hole-in-the-wall taco shop where we were all satisfied, to scoring fiber and (for the kids) free stuffed animals that instantly became beloved friends, to driving back up to Temecula to pick up a Costco Pizza because we couldn't muster the energy to drive home and cook dinner and oops, we hadn't grocery shopped yet at 8 o'clock, all to the soundtrack of Home Alone and naked, sandy kids in the backseat!
